As I sat down to write about my dad in honor of Fathers Day, “our song” kept playing in my mind. (You can hear it here: (You’re the Only Little Girl. )
This is a song I remember singing with my dad as a little girl. I remember just stopping each other in the hallway of our house and we’d play this same game. I would always reply, “daddy, don’t you know? You’re the only man in my heart.” It always ended with an “I love you daddy” and a big hug. It’s a song that is so dear to my heart and one that brings up so much emotion.
I’d like to share it with you this special Father’s Day…
You’re The Only Little Girl By: Steve & Annie Chapman
She skipped across the room
In her pretty little dress
Did a ballerina turn in her patent leather shoes
And to say the very least, I was impressed
She was my little girl
And we played our little game again
I said, “Who’s the only man in your heart?”
And she smiled as we held each other’s hand
And she said, “Daddy don’t you know? Daddy don’t you know? You’re the only man in my heart.”
A few years later in her life
I saw her walking home from school
She had her books in her arms and a young man at her side
I felt a jealous pain, and I felt just like a fool
But when the young man told her bye,
I said, “Can I walk with you?”
And we played our little game again
I said, “Who’s the only man in your heart?”
And she smiled as we held each other’s hand
And she said, “Daddy, don’t you know? Daddy, don’t you know? You’re the only man in my heart.”
Now it’s hard to believe this day has come and gone
He put a ring on her hand, that held her Daddy’s heart
But I’ll always remember as they play her wedding song
The words my little girl said to me
“Daddy, can we play a little game. Who’s the only little girl in your heart?”
And I cried as I softly called her name
And I said, “Honey don’t you know? Honey, don’t you know? You’re the only little girl in my heart.”
I said, “Honey don’t you know? Honey, don’t you know? You’re the only little girl in my heart.”
I’ll always be the little girl in your heart.
I love you, Honey.
I love you too, Daddy.
Another special song my dad and I share, is the song we danced to at my wedding.
We had always said (for like 25 years) that it would be the song I mentioned up above. However, when the time came, it was a different Chapman song we chose to dance to. You can hear it here: Cinderella
It’s amazing to me how, the first song really illustrates my childhood relationship with my dad and how the 2nd “Cinderella” song paralleled our relationship as I was approaching my wedding and then moving across the country with my new Navy Husband.
It felt like the two songs were written for us. And, yes! We played our little game at the end of our father/daughter dance and ended with a “You’re the only little girl in my heart!” and an “I love you daddy.”
I’m happy to share with you the lyrics to our second song:
Cinderella By: Steven Curtis Champan
[Verse 1:]
She spins and she sways to whatever song plays
Without a care in the world
And I’m sitting here wearing the weight of the world on my shoulders
It’s been a long day and there’s still work to do
She’s pulling at me saying “Dad I need you!
There’s a ball at the castle and I’ve been invited
and I need to practice my dancin’
Oh please, Daddy, please!”
[Chorus:]
So I will dance with Cinderella
While she is here in my arms
‘Cause I know something the prince never knew
Oh I will dance with Cinderella
I don’t want to miss even one song
‘Cause all too soon the clock will strike midnight
And she’ll be gone
[Verse 2:]
She says he’s a nice guy and I’d be impressed
She wants to know if I approve of the dress
She says, “Dad, the prom is just one week away
And I need to practice my dancin’
Oh please, Daddy, please!”
[Chorus:]
So I will dance with Cinderella
While she is here in my arms
‘Cause I know something the prince never knew
Oh I will dance with Cinderella
I don’t want to miss even one song
‘Cause all too soon the clock will strike midnight
And she’ll be gone
She will be gone
[Verse 3:]
But she came home today with a ring on her hand
Just glowing and telling us all they had planned
She says, “Dad, the wedding’s still six months away but I need to practice my dancin’
Oh please, Daddy, please!”
[Chorus:]
So I will dance with Cinderella
While she is here in my arms
‘Cause I know something the prince never knew
Oh I will dance with Cinderella
I don’t want to miss even one song
‘Cause all too soon the clock will strike midnight
And she’ll be gone
Okay, one more great song for dad’s.
It’s also by Steve & Annie Chapman. I couldn’t find the lyrics. But, you can listen to it here: Her Daddy’s Love
It is my hope for you today, to take a moment to think about your dad. Whether he is watching over you in heaven, miles away or even by your side right now. Appreciate them. Pray for them. Forgive them. Make ammends if need-be. Make time for them!
If you are reading this and YOU are a father, remember how much this “little game” impacted THIS little girls life. I will never doubt if my dad loved me. He always made sure I knew this. It’s the simple, “I LOVE YOU,” that your little girl needs to hear. Tell her today that you love her. Don’t bottle up your feelings. Fill her heart with her daddies love. No matter how young or old she is. She just needs her daddy’s love!
Happy Father’s Day!
With Aloha,
Lacy

Two of my all-favorite songs! What an awesome Father’s Day gift for all us fathers out here in Bloggerland. Thank you for reminding me of them today.
I have loved the family ministry and all the great family songs of Steve and Annie Chapman since I first heard them… gosh, it’s been over 30 years ago now. Wow. Where does all the time go!
And Steven Curtis Chapman… well, no wonder he’s won so many music awards. Remember his big hit back in the 90s called “The Great Adventure”? You should take that and make it the theme song for your blog!
Thanks for the Father’s Day gift!

Aren’t they just incredible! I wonder if they knew when they released those songs how much of an impact it would have on this father/daughter relationship. It’s really been a staple for us!
I’m going to have to listen to that son again! You had me at “Adventure!” 😉
