“Alexa, Fix Me!”

The kids got an Echo Dot with Alexa for Christmas this year.

They have been having fun asking Alexa to tell them jokes or play them the Pokemon theme song each morning. I’ve been enjoying asking Alexa the weather and to play K-Love radio for us at my voice prompt.

The other day, I overheard my 5-year-old in her room saying,

“Alexa, clean my room.”

“Alexa, I’ll pay you $100 to clean my room.”

I had to stifle my laughter! Oh, her innocence and desire for the “easy way out” of cleaning her room. Can you imagine if that were possible? Can you imagine if there was actually an “ap for that?”

I guess it’s not much different from having the Roomba vacuum for me. I can see why she thought her Alexa could clean her room.

Let’s dream for a moment… What else could Alexa do for us? Make dinner? Fold laundry? Clean the bathrooms? Massage my back? Can you tell it’s the end of the day and I’m exhausted?

What if we took this a little further…What if  Alexa could help us in other ways?

Just think what it would be like if we could have an “ap” or “Alexa” that would “give me confidence.” Or, “comfort me when I’m scared.” Imagine saying, “Alexa, help me think of others more.”

As I continue to think about this, I’m reminded, we DO have that. Only,

the name we cry out isn’t “Alexa,” it’s “God.”

I’m reminded of 1 Chronicles 16:11: Seek the LORD and His strength; Seek His face continually.

What if I were to ask God for help as much as I ask Alexa?

What if we trusted God to give us the answers of our heart as much as we trust Alexa to give us the weather forecast. We are trusting a robot to “tell us the future weather.” Why aren’t we asking the one who creates the weather?

It’s pretty humbling when I think about it honestly. I have a feeling, I will be thinking about this every time I ask Alexa to do something for me. I’ll be reminded to ask myself, “what have I asked and trusted God with today?”

  2. Haha! My kids like interrogating Siri too. 😂 I once caught my son asking her why she didn’t know if she believed in God. Last night I caught myself wishing I could tell somebody about my fears regarding an upcoming decision I keep vacillating over. I realized I was being silly; the best one to talk to was, of course, God.

    1. Thanks for sharing! As I was writing, I was realizing the same thing. I tend to put so much value into what Alexa (or Siri) tells me. I need my faith to be that strong as well. As you pointed out, Alexa/Siri doesn’t always have the answer to our questions. God is the same way. He may not give us an obvious answer. That makes some people lose faith. But, the difference between God and Alexa/Siri is that Alexa may straight up just not know the answer. God always knows the answer. He guards our hearts and tells us when we are ready-and in His timing. He loves us more than a robot or ap ever could!

  5. Love this! I was a preschool teacher and that is a fun age where they totally believe things like that. But it’s probably just a matter of time before there really IS a robot that can clean our rooms. Bots are taking over the world. LOL.

    With this age of robots, I am finding that I can sometimes go a full 24 or even 48 hours without sitting down with Jesus for even 30 minutes to read his word, pray, and listen – to just be still and know that he is God. But how many hours of those 48 was I on my laptop and my cell phone, etc? So I have begun to actually write myself a daily schedule the night before (as I work from home) on a small whiteboard, and I make sure that “Time with Jesus” is on that schedule.

      1. Yes, I did it because I would sometimes not get around to it at all, but I noticed that I DID get around to most things I had written down to do. I thought, If time with Jesus is more important than all these other things, let me schedule it into my calendar. It has been working for me so far!

  7. Wow this may be my favorite blog post, I mean they are all good but I like what you said. I have an Echo and use it all the time, as a matter of fact, I ask Alexa to turn my lights on/off when I was in Hawaii I was very close one night saying “Alexa turn off the light” as I was comfortable and didn’t feel like getting up to turn the light off. The way we rely on on technology now days is crazy, and the generation now that’s all they know.

    1. Eli, I’m glad this one spoke to you! I bought the stuff to do the lights but I can’t figure it out! I should’ve had you show me how to set it up😂 It’s amazing how much we have all learned to depend on technology. I read a book recently about a trend forecaster who predicted we would start to crave the “old ways.” I would love that! And, guess what? They have come out with regular cell phones that aren’t “smart” phones. Maybe that’s a sign the forecaster was right!
