How a Lunchbox Changed My Day: A Story About a Simple Act of Kindness

I'm part of Post A Day 2016

I feel really good about today.

I woke up energized and excited about the day. I made the kids breakfast, packed school lunch, drank a few sips coffee on the drive to school drop off…

Life…felt…good!

Once I got home, I sat down to enjoy my coffee and start my devotion. It is then, that I noticed my sons lunch box sitting on the counter…

Ugh…there goes my plan of relaxing and spending some time reading the Bible before starting on my long “to do” list. He is Notorious for forgetting things and it can be very frustrating!

I decided, instead of letting it ruin my morning, I was going to make the best of it and use this as an opportunity to go eat lunch with my son at school. I usually try to join him for lunch about once a month. Unfortunately, my other obligations have kept me busy the past month or two so I was due for a lunch date anyway.

He always loves it when I come see him at school. It’s usually a surprise. So, when he sees me standing there outside of the cafeteria holding my own lunchbox, his face just lights up. The feeling that it gives me (seeing my son so proud of me and excited to see me) just makes my love tank overflow!

I’m always greeted with a big hug and lots of smiles from his classmates. I feel like a celebrity because they ALL want to sit by me and talk to me through lunch. I smile and chat with them all. But, my lunch date gets all of my hugs!

It’s such a simple gesture. And yet, it made BOTH of us feel so good.

It set the tone for the rest of my day.

I still had time to enjoy a cup of coffee and read my bible. I still had time to clean the house. I still had time to blog. I still had time to go to Costco.

I’m so grateful for this day. I’m grateful for that inconvenient lunch box I saw cluttering my kitchen countertop. I’m grateful for those unexpected mid-day hugs. But, most of all I’m grateful for my son!

Is there something simple you can do for your family to brighten their day? It’s the smallest gestures that mean the most! Take a minute today to do something special for someone and see how it makes your day feel better!

  1. That is sooo sweet. It is one thing I can not do since they eat lunch with me everyday. 😦

  2. What an awesome idea! I hope lots of moms take this to heart and consider putting something similar into practice in their families. Absolutley beautiful. My wife and I ended up homeschooling all our kids, so we never had the chance to do something like this, but this almost makes me miss the joy an experience like this would have brought. Thanks for sharing it… and for being such an awesome mom!
