Yo-Yo Faith: Staying Focused in the Highs & Lows

I'm part of Post A Day 2016

Grit

This past weekend, my Pastor spoke in his sermon about having a yo-yo faith. I have heard this analogy before. But, it must’ve been something I needed to hear because it has been on my mind ever since.

There are so many things in life we can yo-yo back and forth with. Dieting, exercise, following through with a goal…anything really.

When we yo-yo, we are hitting highs and lows of something. When it comes to christianity or our faith, it can happen quite frequently even.

It seems like we are at a high when we see an answered prayer. We are so excited for the “blessing” and can be on cloud 9 for a while.

Unfortunately, after some time, this excitement fades and this is when the downward part of the yo-yo happens. We may not get the answer we want and feel discouraged or down. We may even be angry at God which only distances us from Him even more.

Picture with me a yo-yo.

Now, imagine the yo-yo ball in the “upper” position on the string. In this position, we are being drawn closer to God. Now, imagine the yo-yo ball falling down to the “lower” position of the yo-yo string. This is where we are distanced from God. We have “fallen” away from Him. In this, we are literally experiencing the “highs and lows” feelings.

The good news, is that no matter how many times we “fall” God will always take us back because He loves us. We can always find comfort in Him.

God promises us that He always has our best interest at heart. It may not feel like it and it might actually upset us when His plan isn’t the same as our plan. But, I think it’s important to have grit: The relentless resolve to keep pursuing a desired goal and not give up. We should strive to keep our faith in the “upper” even when things aren’t going our way and we want to start falling.

Friends, today with whatever it is you may be struggling with, I encourage you to keep your faith “up.” Draw closer to Him/the heavens. Draw strength from him. Don’t let the devil weigh you down and draw you near to him. Stay strong and find that bit of sunshine today!

Find beauty in today. Remember that God has your best interest at heart even when you feel you are in the lows. By drawing near to Him, you will be pulled up which is a beautiful place to be!

Happy Tuesday my friends!

  1. Hey! Unfortunately I don’t have enough hours in the day to read your blog like I want to but I read a little bit at a time. I wanted to thank you for sharing your heart , family, and faith! Motherhood is the best adventure and I love reading what other like minded moms thing, feel, and experience. It wouldn’t be a fun adventure if we had to be on it alone. Thanks for your inspirations. I wanted to let you know how much I enjoy you blog and so I nominated you for an award. Please know your work is appreciated. You can read more about it here.

    1. Thank you! He is amazing! I find him so encouraging! With us moving as often as we do, it can be tricky to find a church that’s just right in each place we live. This church and its pastors have been exactly what I needed in this season of my life. I’m so blessed by them!
