If you’re looking for an easy outdoor walk in the Omaha area, the OPPD Arboretum is a convenient option that offers a mix of paved and natural trails without requiring a long drive or complicated plan.
It’s not a remote, silent nature escape—and you will likely hear some nearby road noise—but it still offers a nice break from being indoors and a chance to get outside and move. In fact, I brought a book and read under a tree for a bit afterwards because I wasn’t quite ready to leave yet!
What the Trail Is Like
One of the best things about the OPPD Arboretum is that it has variety in its trail surfaces and scenery. It’s great for all ages and dogs on a leash.
You’ll find:
- Smooth, paved paths that are easy to walk
- Wood-chipped natural trails that feel more wooded and relaxed
- Placards along the way giving tree facts and safety tips
This mix makes it easy to choose your own experience. You can stick to the more accessible paved sections or wander into the softer, more natural paths depending on your preference.
It’s not a difficult trail, but it does offer enough variety to keep a casual walk interesting.
What to Expect Atmosphere-Wise
This is more of a “suburban nature space” than a remote hiking destination. You’ll likely hear traffic from nearby roads at times, especially in certain sections of the trail.
Even so, the arboretum still provides open space, fresh air, and a simple way to step outside and reset for a bit.
Best Time to Visit
Early morning or later in the evening tends to be most comfortable. Midday can be warmer and a bit more active depending on the day.
Spring and early summer bring the most vibrant green, while fall adds nice seasonal color across the trees and grasses.
What to Bring
- Comfortable walking shoes (paved + wood-chip surfaces)
- Water, especially in warmer weather
- Bug spray during summer months
- Phone or camera if you enjoy casual nature photos (there were a lot of family photoshoots when I was there)
Why It’s Worth a Visit
The OPPD Arboretum is best viewed as a simple, flexible local walking spot rather than a destination trail.
It’s easy to access, easy to navigate, and gives you options depending on how far—or how relaxed—you want your walk to be.
Sometimes the best places aren’t the quietest ones, but the ones that make it easy to step outside, move your body, and take a break from the day.
With Love and Aloha,
Lacy
