Trekking Thursday
You guys!!!! I just had the most amazing hike!
The kids hiking group I volunteer with did a hike with its leaders today to Lilikoi Junction.
This 4 mile hike was such a hidden little gem I had no clue existed. If you read my post Pu’u O Mahuka Heiau: A Beautiful Hike to a Hawaiian Temple, you might find it interesting to know, this trail is located right by that Heiau.
We began on the Pupukea-Paumalu Trail which is actually a 9.4 mile trail. About 2 miles in, we reached Lilikoi Junction which was our destination goal for today. At this point, several trails meet up in a nice resting area with picnic tables and some shade.
This trail takes you through a pretty forest which is the terrain for a majority of the hike.

About a half a mile in, you are rewarded with the first treasure…a World War II bunker.
If you didn’t know it was there, you could easily bypass it. You will know you are at the pillbox when you see this bench overlooking the coastline:

This bench is a perfect spot to watch the whales below when they are in season. Excitingly enough, Oahu just saw its first whales today! Whale season has officially begun!!!
I’m pretty used to seeing these pillboxes along the hiking trails here in Hawaii. However, this one was pretty unique. Not only is there one pillbox…there are 3…stacked on top of one another!!! Talk about cool! The kids had a blast exploring them.

This is a popular mountain biking trail and there are some pretty incredible natural and man-made ramps. There is a great biking community which has been responsible for maintaining this trail. They do such a great job. It is beautiful! This area was the most impressive:

Keep hiking along and eventually, you will reach Lilikoi Junction. This little spot was so much fun to look around!
We stopped here, enjoyed a snack and then headed back.

NOTE: This trail is one of many trails in this forest. I would highly suggest going with someone who is familiar with the trail as you can easily get accidentally on another trail and become lost.
All in all, it was such a fun day out with our friends and I hope to come back again and explore some more!
With Aloha,
Lacy

Wow. That covers a lot. Lush tropical forest, slick rock, ocean views, history, and picnic tables along the way. I’ll bet the kids loved it. And you😍

Thank you! It was a beautiful day. Afterwards, we stopped by the Dole Plantation for some Dole Whip (similar to icecream). It really was a great day!
