How Great Thou Art

how GreaT

It doesn’t matter how many times I hear this song or even who sings it…for years, God has used this as the song to speak to my heart the most. It doesn’t matter what mood I’m in-happy, angry, sad, depressed, excited…

It has me sobbing every single time.

It puts things into perspective for me. It reminds me of how small I am. How BIG He is.

It reminds me how this life is just a stepping stone to greener pastures in heaven.

I remember singing this song in the little Baptist church I grew up attending in a small Nebraska town. I actually remember feeling how powerful this song was even then, at a young age. I doubt I fully understood it. But, I DO remember my heart skipping a beat once those first few chords started playing.

I’m saddened how Christianity has taken on a bad reputation due to how some “Christians” and “churches” act.

I think it’s important to not lose sight of what FAITH is all about. FAITH is about serving our God…it shouldn’t be based on what other “Christians” are doing or not doing that we may not agree with. It’s not about agreeing or disagreeing with how certain churches are run. Luckily, God doesn’t judge us all as a whole group. Why should we judge Christians as a whole group? We are ALL individuals. We ALL sin. We ALL make mistakes. We ALL are loved by God.

Yes, there are some phony Christians out there.

They hide under the label of being a Christian when, in all reality, they aren’t practicing what they preach. Keep in mind, they are people too. They aren’t perfect (even if they try to come off as perfect.) It’s not our job to judge them. Just as they shouldn’t judge us.

Faith is about creating and nurturing a personal relationship with God.

That’s right, PERSONAL. Your relationship with God should be personal and based on how YOU and GOD do life together. Don’t let other people and their experiences alter YOUR relationship with Him.

If it’s been a while since you’ve listened to this song (or maybe you haven’t heard it before). Maybe you’ve distanced yourself from God because of others. I urge you to listen to this song with fresh ears and an open heart. Let Him back in your life!

Here are the lyrics:

O Lord, my God, when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder
Thy power throughout the universe displayed
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art
And when I think of God, His Son not sparing
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in
That on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing
He bled and died to take away my sin
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art
When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
And lead me home, what joy shall fill my heart
Then I shall bow with humble adoration
And then proclaim, my God, how great Thou art
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art

Like I said, it doesn’t matter WHO sings it. Its powerful lyrics do all of the work! Take your pick on which version you watch.

    1. Yes! I liked that one too! I used to be a big Colin Ray fan. Back in Elementary School, I had the opportunity to meet him backstage before his concert. So cool! I will have to watch his performance of How Great Thou Art! Thanks!
