Friends, I’ve been wanting to share this picture with you! Today, was the perfect opportunity with the word prompt “sail!”
The Hokule’a recently returned to Oahu, HI from its 3 year voyage around the world using nothing but stargazing and traditional voyaging techniques from ancient days!
After sailing 60,000 miles over three years, and visiting more than 23 countries and territories and 150 ports, Hōkūleʻa returned home to Magic Island, Oʻahu on June 17, 2017. The canoes were welcomed home by thousands of people who came to celebrate this epic Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage. Source: hokulea.com
Isn’t that AMAZING!?!?!
I had heard “a boat” was coming back. But, I had no clue the magnitude of its arrival until the next day. I am so disappointed we didn’t get to attend the homecoming ceremony as this is one of the beaches I frequent regularly and it was a day for the history books for sure!
We headed over to Magic Island the next day hoping to still see the boat. Unfortunately, all that was left was some leis and a feeling of aloha. We did see this smaller “Moana” boat and the kids enjoyed imagining Moana riding on it with Hei Hei the chicken. This boat is named: Wanana Paoa and was constructed in five months by community volunteers — firefighters, teachers, NOAA scientists, nonprofit organizers. It’s smaller than the Hokule’a but had the honor of joining them on its final leg of the trip back to the island of Oahu. What an honor!
It’s all pretty fascinating!
