Dutch Goes the Photo: Photo Challenge (yellow)

I’m surrounded by yellow! I LOVE the color yellow! So much in fact, the accent color of my house is yellow and red (I think that’s the Husker in me! ha) It just seems so cheery to me!

When thinking of something to write about with the prompt of yellow, I thought of Pineapples-maybe one of our trips to the Dole Plantation for the amazing Dole Whip? Maybe the sunshine or a beautiful Hawaiian sunset? I remember when we first moved to Oahu, I was so shocked to see the firetrucks were…YELLOW! But, for the life of me, I couldn’t find a picture of one that I took. Yellow firetrucks still seem wrong to me by the way. Shouldn’t all firetrucks be “fire engine red?” Anyway…

What was I to do?

Well, I resorted to asking my kiddos for a suggestion. They love to help me with blogging. They are constantly doing something and saying, “will you take a picture of this and blog about it?” ha. They are definitely my biggest fans!

When I asked them what I should blog about that is yellow, they both said, “Pikachu!”

I should have known! This has been a summer FULL OF POKEMON!

So, I decided, today I would open up this post to them. This idea is all them! They even took the photo for me!

Everywhere I look around my house, you see a Pokemon of some-sort. Even as I “wake up” my computer screen, it opens up to a web page of free Pokemon coloring pages. Pokemon sandals sit by our back door. Pokemon puppets hang from our “kids art display.” Our laundry room has Pokemon underwear in the dryer. My sons new Pokemon backpack for school hangs from a hook on our backpack station.

I don’t know where this obsession stemmed from. It came out of nowhere it seems. I began the summer with a great “To Do” list for the kids to do each morning before they could turn on the TV or play video games. It included things like: make your bed, get dressed, eat breakfast, help someone in the family, play outside 20 min, read, clean up one room, etc.

Well, in addition to this, they had more time to do chores so I thought they would be excited about earning some chore money. Boy, was I surprised to find out, they were more excited to earn Pokemon trading cards! Let me tell you! They are like magic! These kids will do ANYTHING if they can earn a new Pokemon card! The best part, is that I can take them away for bad behavior. They can earn them back with good behavior. It’s been working better than I would’ve ever imagined.

Even with a house full of Pikachu lately, I still really don’t know too much about it. In fact, my son was so worried I wouldn’t do it justice so he gave me his Pokemon book I could use as a reference as I write this. Isn’t he just the sweetest thing?

Here’s what I do know…that yellow little creature is named Pikachu. Him and his 500 other friends (whose names are super crazy and my kids seem to know all of them!) have captured my kids’ hearts for whatever reason the past few months. So, even though I find it odd and the voices on the show to be even more annoying than Barney the Dinosaur, I am going to embrace this season with them!

I’m going to be excited with them when they earn a new Pokemon card and get to put it in their trading binder. I’m going to help him pick out the best Pokemon backpack with his school supplies (anything to make him excited to start-up school again!) Most importantly, I’m going to show an interest in it-for them. It’s important to them. So, I’m going to try to make it more important to me!

So, off I go to tuck my kids into bed tonight in their Pokemon pajamas while they snuggle with their Pokemon stuffies….

    Awesome insight! Not just ALLOWING them to have their interest, but joining in WITH them. Being a participator, not just a spectator. This is a major key to cultivating a strong relationship of any kind, be it marriage, parent-child, or BFFs. Sadly, few practice it with little more than lip service.

    For my wife and son, it was video games. Now, even though my son is grown, she still enjoys playing them. She has a few favorites on her iPad, but when the new Nintendo Switch came out, she just had to get one… and she loves it!

    Hey, don’t laugh! I’ll bet when I check in with you in 20 years you’ll still have Pokemon figures in your curio cabinet!

    1. That’s so true! It really does need to be more than “lip service.” Now, that I posted it, you all can hold me accountable to it! ha

      I do enjoy playing video games with them too. We love playing Super Mario 3D World. Or the old school Super Mario Brothers. He calls it “Super Mario Brahs” I’m not sure if it’s because of the abbreviation (bros) or if we’ve been in Hawaii long enough for him to start picking up the slang here? hehe

      As for 20 years from now…that’s the great thing about blogging…I will have a “journal” of what was important to me at the time. Something I can check back into someday if I choose. I will look at the Pokemon figure on my curio cabinet, read this and say, “oh, THAT’S where it all began! Summer 2017!” haha

      1. Wow. That brings back memories. The old school Super Mario “Brahs” is what my son grew up on. As for me, it was Pong, Space Invaders, and Asteroids in the arcades, along with my all-time favorite, Lode Runner on the Apple IIe. In fact the icon you see there for the gravatar next to my blog name? That’s me in my Lode Runner costume! 🙂
