Autumn Stroll Along Walnut Creek’s Golden Trail

I was heading home from an appointment across town when I couldn’t help but notice how beautiful it was outside for being the end of October in Nebraska. I realized I had walking shoes on and decided to pull over and find somewhere new to walk around and explore. You never know how long this nice weather will last here in the mid-west.

The Basics:

Paved Trail

The moment I pulled into the parking lot at the Walnut Creek Lake Trail, I knew this hike was going to be a good one! Any trail with a lake instantly draws me in—probably because my love for the ocean makes me a sucker for water views.

This recreational area has a paved bike/walking trail, a 5 mile bike trail, equestrian trail, 4 picnic and playground spots, RV park, dog park and a boat dock/ramp. My favorite thing about this area is that it is 70% native Nebraska prairie. My time volunteering on beach restoration projects with 808 Cleanups in Hawaii taught me the true value of environmental stewardship, and I’ve carried that knowledge with me here to Nebraska.

The trail was full of life today—Canadian geese, ducks, pelicans, and even a heron. Honestly, I could watch them for hours.

As I continued on, there was this beautiful bridge. I stopped to look over the edge and noticed a historical sign stating it was built in the 1940’s. Pretty cool!

One thing that makes this space unique was an island in the center of it! I almost walked past it. But then stopped myself remembering that, just because I’m not in Hawaii anymore, doesn’t mean I give up my sense of exploring! I was surprised to see a few different benches to sit on. It’s a great spot to sit and read for a while—or just watch the boaters go by (like the one that waved as he passed)!

It was about this part of the trail when my phone died…no more pictures and no more audio book. I always struggle between wanting to listen to a book or podcast while I walk or just listening to nature. Today, I got a little bit of both.

Alone in my thoughts, I could feel God’s presence and took the opportunity to pray and talk to him about some things that have been on my mind. Some time away from the usual distractions was exactly what I needed to be able to listen.

As I wrapped up the hike and headed to back to my car, I felt SO glad I chose to make this little pit stop today. It will most likely be the last time this year since it’s getting colder out. But, I can’t wait to come back in the spring/summer. There were some really nice flower beds and areas I’d like to explore more when in full bloom!

Where’s your favorite place to be alone with your thoughts?

Do you plan your hikes for the views, or for the quiet?

With Love and Aloha,

Lacy
