Find Serenity: Your Body Will Thank You!

Wellness Wednesday

We had some pretty incredible weather yesterday. It was the first time I can remember actually hearing thunder and seeing lightening since we moved to Hawaii 2 years ago.

I love a good rain storm. It takes me back to my childhood in Nebraska. We got some really big storms there. The only problem with them…they could lead to tornadoes!

Luckily, not here in Hawaii. Just flooding.

I picked up my son from school and we headed to the library. He wanted a new "Hank the Cowdog" book so I promised him we would go.

We gathered up a few books each and just sat down to thumb through them when the storm started.

The rain was coming down so hard, we decided to just stay and enjoy the quiet environment and read for a bit.

Before we moved to Hawaii, I worked in libraries off and on for over 12 years. The library holds a special place in my heart and I find them so peaceful.

People sometimes ask what "smells" bring them comfort. To me, open up a library book and take a whiff…that's what comforts me!

So, as we sat in the library for a few hours, I just sat back, and read in my sanctuary of books. It felt amazing! The only thing better than reading in silence, is reading in silence while it rains outside!

I read an entire book even! It was short, but perfect for our library visit. Even better, I did this with my kids. They sat with their books and read too. It made me smile to see my little bookworms enjoying themselves too.

Reflecting on the day, I can't help but just "feel good." It made me wonder why I don't do that more often. Why don't I go to the place I feel at peace at and just unwind like we did?

When I have free time, I tend to want to go to the beach or go hiking. Don't get me wrong-those are both definitely my "happy place!"

But, over the years, I've forgotten how satisfying it feels to me to just go and sit with a book in the library!

How about you? Is there a special place you used to go to "get away?" A place where you could unwind and leave your thoughts behind and just BE?

Maybe it's time to go back and pay that place a visit.

It was so good for my mind, body and soul to revisit the library.

That feeling of simply feeling "good" is so beneficial to our health too. Did you know, when you are in this calm state, your blood pressure lowers and your immune system gets a boost?

We oftentimes think of exercise and diet when we think of wellness. However, our mental health is important as well and is so often overlooked.

We need to take time for ourselves to slow down, and banish stress by finding that place of calmness like what I spoke of.

Make some time out of your day today to find serenity. Is it a book, sewing, resting in a hammock? Whatever it may be for you, I encourage you to do it today.

Love yourself enough to make time for that. And, remember, you're doing your body a favor in doing so!
