Make it Monday
Do you ever find yourself holding on to a piece of furniture but you don’t really know why? Maybe it was expensive and you don’t want to just toss it. Maybe it has sentimental value-it was the first thing you bought as a married couple.
For me, that piece was the over the toilet bathroom storage shelf. They are a pretty common piece. Nothing unique or special about it really.
But, for some reason, I had this desire one day to fix it up a bit. I had been watching HGTV’s Fixer Upper and I decided my house needed to be a little more “beachy farmhouse.”
I also had some paint sitting around. Scary combination! Just ask my husband. I’m constantly “fixing it up” all around the house. Lucky for me, he’s used to my craziness and is okay with it.
I started out by taking off the cabinet doors. Initially, this was just for me to paint it. But, I ended up liking the look of it without the doors. So, I left them off. I probably should’ve filled in the screw holes. But, I didn’t really know how this was going to turn out. So, I didn’t worry about it. I used a chalky paint that I mixed up myself: paint and plaster of paris mixed together. As I brushed it on, I noticed how I liked the distressed look of not completely covering it. So, I went light on the paint.
I let it dry.
Once it was dry, I painted on some antiquing wax and rubbed it into the cracks and wood grain with an old cloth.
I let it dry.
Once, that was dry, I finished it off with a clear wax and rubbed off the excess.
I let it dry.
Now, for the fun part…decorating!
Since we live in base housing, I try to avoid painting the walls in our house. This piece is used in our little half bath which needed a little dash of color. My house decor is mostly grey with a little pop of red, teal and yellow here and there. So, this was perfect.
It also matches a painting I did of a mermaid. #winning!
My plain old bathroom has become one of my favorite rooms of the house because of this shelf. I LOVE it!
Do you have any furniture sitting around your house that you could give a little face-lift to? Try it! What do you have to lose?!?!
