Choosing Wonder This Christmas

Wonder.

Step back and watch a child while they are looking at a Christmas tree covered in twinkly lights and shiny bulbs. They are full of wonder. Full of curiosity, contentment and awe. To adults, the Christmas tree (and much of the Christmas season for that matter) has become something we “get through.” Sure, we say we love the holidays and that we enjoy the traditions that go along with it-the hot cocoa, baking cookies, hanging the stockings…

But, do we REALLY enjoy them? Do we allow ourselves to look at Christmas with the same wonder a child sees?

As a mom to teenagers, our days of Santa and Elf on the Shelf are long behind us. To be honest, I found that transition a relief. Like one less chore. Looking back, I wish I would’ve taken more time to enjoy it.

Those days are short…they truly are.

This year, I find myself with this deep desire to SLOW DOWN. Truly slow down and FEEL Christmas. FEEL its wonder. FEEL its magic.

We just returned from visiting our family in Texas for Thanksgiving. You can read about that here: When Someone is Missing at the Table

The moment we arrived home and pulled into the driveway, my daughter was already asking to put up the Christmas tree.

Really?!? We just drove 9 hours! I work in the morning, she had school…Oh to have her energy!

But maybe it wasn’t energy at all—maybe it was wonder. That beautiful way children live completely in the present and aren’t weighed down by the worries of tomorrow; they’re simply here, in the moment.

Her eagerness became a quiet reminder to me: wonder is still here, waiting to be noticed. Children don’t overlook it the way we adults do—they welcome it. So this Christmas, I’m choosing to slow down, to set aside the noise of tomorrow, and to look at the season through the eyes of a child. Because that’s where the magic lives.

With love and aloha,

Lacy
